UPDATE – Country of melt-and-pour requirements – Canada

The following is provided by Global Affairs Canada (GAC)

Broadcast Message – Upcoming Requirement For Country of Melt and Pour Information

Please note that the upcoming regulatory changes to General Import Permits (GIP) No. 80 – Carbon Steel and No. 81 – Specialty Steel are expected to come-into-force on November 5, 2024.

Importers will be required to provide country of melt and pour (COM) information when completing their customs declarations through the Single Window Integrated Import Declaration (SW IID) for applicable steel imports as a term and condition of using the GIPs.

While the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has notified importers that the conditional COM rules are not expected to be implemented in the SW IID on November 5th, importers will still be able to provide COM information via the SW IID and will be required to comply with the updated regulatory requirements of the GIPs

For further information regarding the Steel Import Monitoring Program, including updates on COM, please refer to the GAC website.

Concerns or questions can be directed to the Canadian regulatory team.
