On Thursday, the White House issued “Proclamation to Modify the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States and for Other Purposes.” This proclamation will amend the tariff schedule to implement the five-year update to the World Customs Organization’s (WCO) Harmonized Tariff System tariff nomenclature.
There are approximately 350 amendments affecting 5600 tariff classification numbers, for the 2022 WCO Tariff. Updates include the following sectors agriculture, base metals, chemical, machinery, textiles, transportation, wood, and other sectors.
Please note that these changes will not take effect for shipments entering the United States on January 1, 2022. Rather, the changes will take effect thirty days after the official notice is published in the Federal Register. That notice has not yet been published.
The WCO tariff changes for shipments entering Canada are still scheduled to take effect on January 1st, 2022.
