The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has launched a public consultation on proposed changes to fresh fruit and vegetables (FFV) grade standards.
The consultation will be carried out in five phases, each focusing on a specific group of FFV commodities. Phase 1, which opened October 29 and will close December 31, focuses on grades and requirements for greenhouse cucumbers and greenhouse tomatoes.
Phase 2 is now open for public comment, and proposes changes to grades and requirements for apples, apricots, asparagus, grapes, peaches, pears, and plums and prunes. It also proposes grades and requirements for nectarines, for the first time in Canada. Interested parties will have until February 11, 2022 to review and comment on the proposed changes.

Later phases of the consultation are expected to continue into late-2022. When each phase begins, the CFIA will notify stakeholders who have subscribed to the Agency’s email notification service.
