The following is provided by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency
Please be advised that effective immediately, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will require industry to reduce Salmonella to below detectable amounts in frozen raw breaded chicken products that are packaged for retail sale.
Despite efforts to improve labelling and increase consumer awareness that these products are raw and need to be fully cooked before consumption, frozen raw breaded chicken products continue to be identified as a source of Salmonella infections.
Processors will be required to identify Salmonella as a hazard that is likely to occur and industry is expected to implement suitable measures allowing them to manufacture an end product that does not contain detectable amounts.
The CFIA is granting a 12 month implementation period to accommodate these changes.
