Government Shutdown Possible on January 19th, February 2nd

Previously, U.S. Congress passed a stop gap spending bill that prevented a government shutdown on November 17th. Another stop gap bill was passed extended funding until January 19th for some agencies, and February 2nd for others. Therefore, if a shutdown were to occur, it would be a partial shutdown to start.

In the event of a shutdown, we want to advise our clients that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will continue clearance operations to ensure the flow of trade. However, Partner Government Agencies (PGAs) such as the FDA, APHIS, and the EPA may not be fully staffed, which will result in processing delays.

If the shutdown occurs, we urge our clients to watch PGA messaging closely for the “1USG” message indicating all goods have been released from PGA review. If that message is not received, please advise your U.S. buyer to hold the goods intact until the message is received.

There is no timetable for the resumption of normal business operations if the shutdown occurs.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the situation continues to develop. If you have any questions, please contact transitionteamus@willsonintl.com
