What is the FSMA?

What is the FSVP?
The Foreign Supplier Verification Program
As a Canadian company that exports human or animal food, are we subject to FSVP?
Yes. If you are the importer of record, you will need to supply the contact information and the DUNS number for your US buyer.
As a US company that imports human or animal food, are we subject to FSVP?
Yes. As a US importer of food, you will need to provide your FSVP contact information and DUNS number with your shipment information for clearance. Additionally, you will need to develop a foreign supplier verification program for your company.
When do we need to begin providing the additional FSVP information?
The mandatory effective date is May 30th, 2017
How do I, or my US customers, obtain a DUNS number?
A DUNS number can be obtained by contacting Dun & Bradstreet by phone 866-705-5711, via email at govt@dnb.com or by accessing http://www.dnb.com/duns-number.html?source=govdelivery&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery
Why do we need to provide this information?
The FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act has mandated this program to prevent contamination of food imported into the United States.
What happens if we don’t provide this information?
Imports of food will not be released by the FDA without the FSVP contact and DUNS number for the US party. For the initial implementation, the FDA will allow ONLY the DUNS number to be reported as ‘UNK.’ However, the ability to transmit ‘UNK’ will only be temporary so we encourage your company to continue working diligently to obtain the information.
What food items are exempt from reporting FSVP information?
Juice, seafood, certain meat, poultry and egg products are exempt from FSVP reporting. Additionally, food that is manufactured, grown or processed in the United States, exported and returned without further processing, is also exempt.
