Ensure your customs documents for CBSA are accurate

Under the Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has the the authority to issues penalties for violating CBSA’s trade and border legislation.

The purpose of AMPS is to provide the CBSA with a means to deter non-compliance by its clients and create a level playing field for all Canadian businesses.

Importers must ensure all customs documents related to release are completed properly.

AMPS Contravention C005 is applied against importers when the information required to be provided in any permit, certificate, licence, document or declaration in respect of imported or exported goods is incorrect.

A common error related to this penalty occurs when the incorrect consignee or destination is indicated on the bill-of-lading or customs invoice and is declared on the customs entry.

Monetary penalties for this contravention are graduated and have a retention period of 12 months.
