CFIA updates list of regulated pests to include Cydalima perspectalis (box tree moth)

On November 23, 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) published RMD-22-02: Pest risk management decision (RMD) for the regulation of Cydalima perspectalis in Canada. This decision added Cydalima perspectalis, commonly known as box tree moth (BTM) to the List of Pests Regulated by Canada and identified the province of Ontario as a regulated area for the pest.

Import requirements for Buxus spp. plants for planting have been added to CFIA’s Automated Import Reference System on December 12, 2022. A 60-day transition period ending February 9, 2023 will be applied to minimize trade impacts.

For a period of 60 days, the CFIA will accept phytosanitary certificates without additional declarations. As of February 10, 2023, phytosanitary certificates with additional declarations will be required.

Consult the Automated Import Reference System for commodity and origin-specific phytosanitary import requirements.

External stakeholders and trading partners have been engaged directly or via the WTO e-Ping SPS Platform.
