CFIA Notice to industry – Regulatory responsibilities regarding caffeinated energy drinks

The following is provided by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a notice to industry regarding the food industry’s regulatory responsibilities for caffeinated energy drinks (CEDs). This follows recall warnings for various brands of CEDs.

We are aware of non-compliant CEDs being sold to consumers by various importers, retailers and also online. The CFIA is conducting inspection activities to identify those who are non-compliant.

This is a reminder that industry is responsible for ensuring the CEDs they manufacture, import, or distribute meet Canadian requirements, especially that they do not contain more than 180 mg of caffeine in a single serving container and carry cautionary statements as required.

Consult the notice to industry to learn more.
