The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has lifted the prohibition on the importation of bell peppers from Spain. In December of 2022, peppers from Spain were prohibited due to the detection of the Mediterranean fruit fly.
Please note that peppers from Spain will still need to meet the requirements set forth in the Agricultural Commodity Import Requirements (ACIR) . These requirements include:
- Import Permit
- Inspection
- Commercial shipments only. (Declared on Phytosanitary certificate “”Commercial Consignments Only.”
- Phytosanitary certificate showing the following declarations:
- The peppers were grown in registered greenhouses in either Almeria or Alicante Province in Spain
- The fruit has been inspected and found free of the symptoms of tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV)
- Peppers are only admissible from Almeria and Alicante Provinces. The peppers must be grown in registered greenhouses in the Almeria Province or Alicante Province in Spain.
- May only be shipped from December 1 through April 30.
